The departments of internal medicine are responsible not only for the entire range of diagnostics and treatment of internal diseases, they are also responsible for perioperative (before, during, and after surgery) internal medical care of surgical patients.
The optimal infrastructure for this is provided by a close linking of the individual internal medicine departments with the other specialty departments (i.e. institute for diagnostic imaging, physical therapy, laboratory diagnostics, etc.)
